Not All Contacts are Connections for Collaboration

In the nonprofit and business world, we often hear: “It’s all about who you know.” That’s true—but only partly. Not all contacts are true connections, and not all connections are meant for collaboration.

Too often, we confuse people in our contact lists with partners who can move a vision forward. A contact might exchange pleasantries, offer advice, or provide an introduction—but a connection is different. A connection leans in. They share values, energy, and purpose. Collaboration flows naturally because it’s rooted in trust, mutual respect, and aligned goals.

Contacts may be the names in your phone, LinkedIn network, or donor database. Connections are the relationships built on shared vision, trust, and reciprocity—the people you call for insight, partnership, or accountability.

Recognizing the difference saves time and energy. Chasing every “contact” as a collaborator leads to frustration. But nurturing the right connections can unlock possibilities far beyond what’s written in any partnership agreement.

Collaboration Requires Alignment—and a Deeper Dive

Collaboration isn’t just about researching a potential partner. It also requires assessing your own capacity to deliver. True collaboration means making sure the dots connect, the plan is clear, and most importantly--- execution matches intent.

When values, mission, and timing align, the work becomes impactful and sustainable. Without alignment, collaboration feels forced, draining, and short-lived.

In my own journey, the most transformative partnerships have not come from a cold email or chance meeting, but from authentic connections rooted in trust, shared purpose, and a willingness to grow together.

A Call to Reframe Networking

Instead of asking “Who’s in my contact list?” a more powerful question is: “Who in my network truly shares my vision—and how can we build something meaningful together?”

When we shift from counting contacts to cultivating connections, collaboration becomes not only possible but powerful.
